Kenyans have demanded justice for Jane Nyambura, a grandmother whose story went viral in January 2021, after she threatened to beat up a Chinese contractor in Gatundu North, Kiambu County.
75-year-old Nyambura had been promised Ksh3 million by the government as compensation for her land when the construction of Kariminu dam begun. However, seven months later, she is yet to get the settlement.
Kenyans online demanded that the government compensate Nyambura to enable her to live a comfortable life in her sunset years.
Most argued that there should be clear policies set by the government before they acquire anyone's land.
"It's unfortunate that these foreigners are allowed to construct on a grabbed land. Jane Nyambura should be compensated," said Odero on Twitter.
"The government should put policies that govern compensation and acquisition of public or someone's land. This will enable us evade Jane Nyambura's situation," another weighed in.
In previous interviews, Nyambura narrated that her family had gone through financial difficulties and emotional distress since the government took over their land.
"Over the festive season, I was working as a casual labourer because I didn't have anything to eat. Previously, I wouldn't do any manual jobs because I had cows and I would harvest coffee of up to Ksh100,000 but all that is gone," she stated.
Explaining the viral video where she was seen threatening a girl of Asian decent, Nyambura stated that she felt disrespected when Ms Wong pointed at her.
"I was in so much pain, I felt like beating her up because at the end of the month, she is expecting a salary but I will not have money to cater the needs of my family," she stated.
Wong has since reached out to Nyambura to offer her apology but Nyambura did not accept the apology until she and her neighbours are compensated.
