Lands Cabinet Secretary Farida Karoney has fired a senior Lands official as she undertakes major changes in the Ministry.

In a gazette notice released on Friday, February 19, the Cabinet Secretary revoked the appointment of Polly Wanjiku Gitimu as the chairperson of the Land Surveyors' Board.

In her place, the CS appointed Maritim Weldon to take over the post with the pronouncement taking effect from January 18, 2021.

The Land Surveyors' Board which is constituted under section seven of the Survey Act cap 299 of the Laws of Kenya, is the statutory body responsible for setting and maintaining standards for registered surveyors and regulating and advancing the practice of land surveying in Kenya.

The board conducts the examination of candidates for admission as licensed surveyors in accordance with the provisions of the Act as well as granting licenses and keeping a register of all licensed surveyors.

The body can also take disciplinary proceedings against licensed surveyors and hear and determine any dispute between any licensed surveyor and the client as to the fees charged by the licensed surveyor.

The latest changes in the institution come when the Ministry is undertaking the conversion of land parcels in Nairobi from repealed statutes to the Land Registration Act, 2012.

The transition process to a new registration system will see a number of titles cancelled and replaced with new ones to comply with the law.

The exercise is already underway with land reference numbers for plots in Nairobi having been converted to new parcel numbers, with the corresponding acreage respectively specified in the notice.

In a Gazette notice dated January 26, landowners in Nairobi were advised to check their plots with the new parcel numbers in the ongoing process.

The land is divided into blocks with the most recent notice indicating that they go up to Block 246 and the Land Reference numbers (LR) replaced with new parcel numbers.
