President Uhuru Kenyatta on Friday, February 18 said that the peace and freedom that the nation is currently enjoying was from the handshake initiative between him and the former prime minister Raila Odinga.
Uhuru, who was speaking in Kayole, Nairobi said the handshake had eliminated the divide between him and the Embakasi East Member of Parliament Babu Owino.
“It is because of the handshake that Babu Owino is seated here. Otherwise, he would be planning to throw stones at me,” Uhuru said.
Babu Owino once asked the president to redeem his political career and added that it would only be possible if the president and Raila held a dialogue.
It was around that time in 2018 when the handshake continued taking shape.
The president seems to have gotten comfortable with the presence of Babu which resulted in his acknowledgment.
The president also said that Nairobians will soon be using water for free as part of his strategic plan to cushion them against economic hard times.
While commissioning Soweto Level 2 Hospital which was built by NMS, he called out those opposing the BBI saying they were greedy and making promises to Kenyans without giving them any assurance.
“Did I do anything wrong with the handshake? How will I benefit from these changes yet l will not be the president? I am only doing this because of you,” he said.
The president wanted his leadership to be emulated by others saying that being a leader is not easy.
“I keep on telling people that leadership is in two ways. You can either lead forcefully or with love and God's blessings,” The president added.
He also gave an indication that the Kazi Mtaani Program which supports thousands of youths across the country and which was to end on March 4, might be extended.
“When I was in Uthiru and Kiamaiko, and here, the youth have said they want Kazi Mtaani back, do you agree with them? Let’s see what we will do to have the program back,” Uhuru added.
The president was in the company of Nairobi Metropolitan Services (NMS) Director-General Badi and some members of parliament.
