Passengers Rushed to Hospital After Prison Car Involved in Accident

A group of a volleyball men's team that was to take part in the second leg of the Kenya Volleyball Federation National League was involved in an accident along Kiawara road in Laikipia County.

In a police statement released on Saturday, February 27, the driver is said to have been heading to Nanyuki from Bungoma for their KVF league matches, when he lost control and landed in a ditch.

Six players incurred serious injuries while 12 others escaped with minor injuries. They were rushed to different hospitals in Laikipia County where they are recuperating.

“All the victims are currently being treated at various local hospitals and to be subsequently visited.

"The extensively damaged motor vehicle has been towed to the station for further police action. More progress report to follow as an investigation is commenced forthwith,” the police said in a statement.

The players were set to play with the Kenya Defense Forces (KDF), Kenya Forest Service (KFS) and Prisons Mombasa in Nanyuki Stadium but the matches have since been cancelled.

The latest report by National Transport and Safety Authority (NTSA) in December 2020 indicated that road accidents between January and December 2020 stood at 3,663 compared to 3,508, during the same time in 2019.

An annual increase of 9.4 percent in deaths was recorded. Between January and December 13, 2020, 3,663 people died on the road compared to 3,348 last year, which is a difference in 215 fatalities.

The agency indicated that most accidents are attributed to human-related factors such as speeding, reckless driving, dangerous overtaking, drunk driving, failure to use helmets among others.

Some of the measures that the authority has taken to reduce the accidents include; road mainstreaming in ministries, departments and agencies (MDAs) which is implemented through government performance Contracting.
