UPDATE: The National Police Service on Thursday, March 4, denied arresting UDA candidate Moses Nyakeremba in Kiamokama ward, Kisii County.
In a statement, the police clarified that individuals who were arrested were those accused of voter bribery.
The United Democratic Alliance (UDA) party ticket candidate for the Kiamokama Ward Nyaribari Masaba constituency - Kisii County, has been arrested.
Moses Nyakeremba was arrested over claims of voter bribery at Moremani area.
People who were with the candidate in a car were also teargassed by police after the occupants refused to get out as ordered by the police.
It is also alleged that politician Don Bosco Gichana has also been arrested.
The sit fell vacant on November 1, 2020, after Ken Mainya passed on while being taken to hospital for treatment.
He had been elected to the county assembly of Kisii in 2013 through the ODM party and retained the seat in 2017.
The Independent Electoral and Boundaries Commission (IEBC) cleared 11 candidates for the by-election.
"We cleared eleven out of thirteen candidates who showed interest to contest for the MCA seat. The nomination exercise was open, peaceful and democratic," said County Returning Officer Dr. Sidney Namulungu.
The candidates include; Malack Mainya (ODM), Peter Birundu (Narc Kenya), Vincent Gekone (Independent), Domnic Nyangaresi (Kenya National Congress), Jared Nyaega (Narc), Nyakundi Nyamori (Maendeleo Chap Chap) and Joseph Ouko of Republican Liberty Party.
