Mombasa Governor Ali Hassan Joho and Orange Democratic Movement (ODM) party leader Raila Odinga brought a section of towns in Mombasa County to a standstill on Thursday, March 4.

The streets were flooded with curious onlookers and residents who were anxiously anticipating to see the two leaders as they made their way through the streets via motorcade.

The first stop made was at Kwa Karama in Kongowea Nyali Sub-county where both leaders addressed the residents.

"As the coastal leadership, we are interested in partnerships that address the issues that affect our people including devolution, resource allocation, land, economics and many more.

"With the interests of our people at heart, together we shall soar to greater heights," Joho said.

Raila reiterated Joho's words and urged that the voice of the people would be heard through the Building Bridges Initiative (BBI).

Soon after, both leaders proceeded to Mombasa CBD to dine at a popular Swahili eatery dubbed Barka restaurant. Joho and Raila are perceived to be the favorites to fly the ODM presidential flag in the coming general elections.

This has seen various critics speculate on a civil war within the party in a bid for both leaders to stake their claim as the flag bearer.

Joho has constantly expressed interest to succeed President Uhuru Kenyatta, arguing that his track record speaks for itself.

Further, he has pointed out on numerous occasions that he has defended the party's stand on matters of national interest. However, his counterpart Raila has stayed mum on his 2022 presidential aspirations.

When confronted on Joho's presidential ambitions, Raila noted that the party provides equal opportunities for all members who desire to vie for a political seat.

The ODM leader, in past interviews, has dodged the pertinent question affirming that he's laser-focused on the BBI agenda, which was birthed as a result of the 2018 handshake with Uhuru.
