Businesswoman Recounts Surviving 4 Gunshots

A businesswoman in Kisumu recounted a heart-wrenching incident that saw her get shot at four times by lone gunman inside a public market.

In an interview with Citizen TV, the businesswoman identified as Lilian Awino, revealed that she sustained four bullet wounds; three in her left leg and one in her right.

Awino was among a dozen of people who sustained injuries when a man grabbed a pistol from a traffic police officer in Kisumu County, and proceeded to shoot indiscriminately at passers-by on Friday morning, March 5.

The trader who is hospitalised at the Kisumu County Hospital said she was recuperating well, adding that she was lucky to be alive.

"I remember I left the house in the morning to attend to my morning activities at the bus stop. After about 20 minutes, I heard gunshots.

"A few seconds later I saw people running, and a police who was ahead of me was bleeding. I looked at myself and I saw blood," she explained.

She told the media that she is able to walk without assistance.

"I can walk to the toilet and back. I can also climb the bed without assistance. I can also eat," she added.

The lady sustained soft tissue injuries, and all the four bullets had been retrieved from her body. Doctors also noted that she could make a full recovery.

One person was killed in the Friday incident, while three others were injured.

A police report stated that the suspect approached the officer, who was manning the Jomo Kenyatta Highway roundabout next to Kisumu Bus Park terminus, grabbed his gun and run away, then proceeded to open fire into the crowd. 

The police officer was among the three who were critically injured in the gun melee. The officer, who was shot in the stomach, was rushed to the Aga Khan Hospital for emergency care.
