A woman was on Thursday, March 11, arrested for allegedly being in possession of several explosives - which were reportedly found tucked inside her handbag.

Police said the woman is Kenyan, and that she was arrested in Moyale carrying the deadly explosives which included three grenades and four teargas canisters.

The suspect was taken to court and charged with the offense, with police still trying to establish her motives.

From photos seen by Kenyans.co.ke, it appeared that the suspect was concealing the grenades at the bottom of her purse using the canisters.

The case was forwarded to the Anti-Terror Police Unit (ATPU) for more investigations.

Being in possession of explosives is contrary to Section 29 of the Explosives Act.

"Any person who makes or knowingly has in his/her possession any explosive, with reasonable suspicion shall be guilty of an offence and liable to imprisonment for a term not exceeding seven years, and the explosive shall be forfeited," the Act reads in part.

In September 2020, the ATPU arrested three people among them Tanzania nationals who were allegedly nabbed with 1,000 pieces of explosive detonators in Taita Taveta.

The suspects were arrested in Mwakitau along the Taveta-Mombasa highway by Kenya Revenue Authority (KRA) officers from the Taveta-Holili one-stop border point (OSBP).

“The KRA team, backed by Administration Police officers attached to the OSBP, while on routine patrols intercepted the devices while being transported together with tobacco by a truck no. T143ARG at around 5.30 pm, one kilometre from Maktau roadblock, Taita Taveta County,” KRA Coast regional coordinator John Bisonga disclosed in a statement at the time.

In a recent incident in February 2021, two men were arrested with one AK47 rifle, 128 rounds of ammunition and two hand grenades in Merti, Isiolo County.

The two had been signalled to stop at a police checkpoint but sped off and a high-speed chase and shoot out ensued before their capture.
