UPDATE Wednesday, March 24: Kakamega Senator Cleophas Malala has been removed as the Senate Deputy Minority Leader in a NASA Senate Parliamentary Group meeting.
Kilifi Senator Stewart Madzayo of ODM was elected to replace Malala during the PG meeting held at Parliament buildings.
The National Super Alliance (NASA) has called for a Senate Parliament Group (PG) meeting where they are expected to remove Kakamega Senator Cleophas Malala as the deputy of Senate Minority Leader.
The meeting will be held today on Wednesday, March 24 with a majority of NASA senators (17) endorsing Malala's removal.
The meeting comes amidst a disagreement from the Nasa coalition members over the fate of the troubled senator who has received the support of senators from Wiper, ANC, and Ford Kenya.
A petition for his removal has already been signed by ODM Senators but is yet to be signed by senators from other parties who were elected or nominated under the Nasa umbrella in the 2017 general election.
Reports further indicate that Minority Leader James Orengo held a meeting in which he endorsed the removal of his deputy.
The senators who are yet to append their signatures on the petition include Kitui Semator Enock Wambua (Wiper) newly elected Machakos Senator Agnes Muthama (Wiper), Vihiga Senator George Khaniri (ANC), nominated Senator Petronillah Were (ANC), and Bungoma’s Moses Wetangula of Ford Kenya.
The Kakamega Senator is an ally Musalia Mudavadi of ANC which has recently fallen out with ODM.
Malala's trouble with the ODM leadership intensified when he supported ANC’ candidate in the Matungu by-elections.
28 senators are expected to attend the meeting whose main theme is to decide Malala’s fate as the deputy of Senate minority leader.
Taita Taveta Senator Johnes Mwaruma has been named as the most preferred choice to replace Malala.
The fallout between former Nasa coalition members begun after some of the coalition’s party leaders failed to show up at the controversial swearing of ODM party leader Raila Odinga as the People’s President.
Since then, Raila, Musalia, Kalonzo and Wetangula have expressed their concerns publicly with each side accusing the other of betrayal and failing to honor promises.
