UPDATE April 5, 2021: Mombasa Police have arrested Swabir Mohamed caught on tape torturing a man, for allegedly stealing from Ajab Mills in Shimanzi.
The suspect has been detained at Urban Police Station pending arraignment in court tomorrow.
The Directorate of Criminal Investigations has launched a manhunt for a resident of the coast who was filmed torturing a suspected thief with hot plastic.
While sharing the gory video, the DCI ordered the man to surrender at the nearest police station by Monday evening, April 5, 2021.
“The inhumane punishment meted on the victim, on suspicion of having committed a crime is not only callous but uncalled for and an affront to the victim’s fundamental rights and freedoms.
“In this regard, the DCI is demanding that the suspect presents himself to the nearest police station within 24 hours, failure to which he will be declared a dangerous and wanted criminal,” the statement read.
Consequently, a special team from the Crime Research and Intelligence Bureau, Special Service Unit, and the Operations Branch has been assembled to help in the expeditious arrest of the suspect.
The video, seen by Kenyans.co.ke, showed the man holding a burning plastic net over the suspected thief who was tied to a metal pole.
“It's my first time, it's my first time,” the victim wailed and groaned as the man allowed the hot molten plastic to drip on the man.
In other news, the DCI was under fire over a statement that announced the death of a KDF officer who was fatally injured in a domestic fight.
Many Kenyans faulted the communication team behind the statement due to what some termed as insensitive language.
“Last night, a couple's squabble involving a Kenya Defense Forces officer turned lethal when his 27-year-old wife, armed with her teeth, served him three major bites that promoted him to eternal rest,” read the statement that has since been deleted.
“Dear George Kinoti, who is operating your Twitter handle? Your work is to prevent crime and apprehend offenders for criminal prosecution. Not to dramatize the occurrence of crime!” LSK President Nelson Havi questioned.
