University Education and Research PS Simon Nabukwesi has revealed costly mistakes that KCSE students make when choosing higher education courses.
Speaking on Sunday, April 11, the PS noted that many of the students chose universities instead of careers.
He explained that this approach worked against many students since most get admitted for courses that are not in line with their dreams and careers.
Nabukwesi appealed to teachers to guide students in the selection process explaining that the country had 78 qualified universities from which the learners could apply.
"I encourage the heads of schools to ensure that candidates make career choices so that they choose careers based on their gifts from God and their capacity.
"The tragedy in Africa is that many people do jobs they do not like because they never chose their careers wisely," stated Nabukwesi.
He further noted that after the students get admitted for wrong choices, they spend a better part of the first academic year transferring from institutions.
"After placement, there are normally very many complaints from parents and from students. They keep us busy doing inter-university transfers and inter-faculty transfers. Some of them waste a whole year on transfers wanting to be where they wish to be.
"We want this to be done in advance through good guidance in schools so that students choose where they wish to be," he explained.
Nabukwesi further revealed that a majority of the students often selected the University of Nairobi and posed a challenge to the Kenya Universities and Colleges Central Placement Service (KUCCPS) during the placement process.
Application Extension
On Wednesday, April 7, KUCCPS extended the application for the current 2020/21 KCSE candidates to review their preferred university and college courses.
The eligible students should apply for placement to a degree, diploma, craft certificate and artisan courses under government sponsorship.
The exercise runs online until Friday, April 16 at which point the registration will close.
How to review:
1. Log in to the KUCCPS student portal through the registered credentials i.e. username and password.
2. Click on the Applications tab in the upper left-hand corner to check the requirements.
Alternatively, search for courses by their institutions by clicking on the institution tab.
How to select courses:
1. Scroll through the programs and either add or revise the ones selected in the course basket.
2. To enter your preferred courses, click on the application/revision tab on the site and enter the programme. codes.
3. You can pull the program codes from your selection in the course basket.
4. Once you are done, submit the courses you have selected.
