President Uhuru Kenyatta has gazetted Dr Jamleck Muturi as chairperson of the Teachers Service Commission (TSC).
Muturi will serve for a period of six years at the commission. He will replace Lydia Nzomo whose six year term ended in November 2020.
"In exercise of the powers conferred by Article 250 (2) of the Constitution as read with section 8 (10) of the Teachers Service Commission Act, 2012, I, Uhuru Kenyatta, President and Commander-in-chief of the Kenya Defense Forces, appoint Jamleck Muturi John."
The president also appointed Timon Oyucho as a member of TSC for a term of six years.
The duo was appointed by the president in March and later went through vetting in the National Assembly.
While appearing before the National Assembly Education Committee, Muturi stated that he would improve the quality of teaching by retraining teachers.
He also promised to implement the teachers Collective Bargaining Agreement (CBA) that was signed between TSC and the teachers' unions in 2017.
He vowed to find ways of motivating teachers so that they could deliver their services well.
Oyucho had been a lawyer with TSC until his appointment and had led cases against the Kenya National Union of Teachers (KNUT).
The two entities were engrossed in a legal battle regarding the promotion of teachers, transfer and registration.
ODM leader Raila Odinga had waded into the fallout, noting that the TSC was en route to killing KNUT.
"The teachers may have been subdued and gone silent as a monumental movement they built from scratch since 1957, and which they took pride in, is brought to its knees. But they are certainly not happy."
