A Form One student was forced to approach strangers for help after her father tricked and abandoned her 130 kilometres from their home - Kabati (Kitui) County.
The student at St Catherine Nthagaiya Girls High School in Runyenjes was rescued by good samaritans who escorted her to Kutus Police Station where she recorded a statement.
She alleged that she was left stranded at Kutus Bus Station in Kirinyaga County.
A police report filed at the station detailed that the girl was dressed in her full school uniform and was ready to report to school.
She further told the police that the father sent her to purchase airtime when they arrived at Kutus Bus Station. However, he drove away after she alighted from the Ford Ranger.
The student claimed that the man stated that he could take care of a child he never sired.
Police established that the girl has been under the man's care since the mother passed away in a car accident nearly a month ago.
A manhunt was launched for the father with police adding that they were also investigating the case. The girl was also given shelter at the police station as they contemplated how to escort her to school.
Schools reopened on Monday, May 10, with all students lest Grade Four reporting to their respective institutions. CS George Magoha warned schools against contravening his orders.
“Every Kenyan child is equal. For us, we do not bother whether a child is in private or public school. We believe that every Kenyan child is equal and should be treated that way.
“Go and create your country, government and then your education system,” he told private schools while cautioning them against recalling Grade Four students.
