Kenya Revenue Authority (KRA) has unveiled a new digital system aimed at revolutionising revenue collection in Nairobi County.

Other services are customer registration and account creation, market cess, as well as Applications for Food Handlers Certificate for both individual and non-individual.

In a recent press briefing, the taxman revealed that it had operationalised the system and official launch is expected in a few days.

The system, Nairobi Revenue System (NRS), is an initiative of the National Government, in collaboration with the Nairobi Metropolitan Services and the Kenya Revenue Authority.

It is aimed at having an integrated single revenue collection system. NRS is being deployed in phases with more services set to be availed as the technology advances.

How it works

To access services through the NRS, customers are required to create an account on the NRS portal using the link https://nairobiservices.go.ke or download the Nairobi e-Services mobile app from Google Play Store.

There are numerous services found in the services section of the portal including parking, land and urban planning, property management, social services and permits, business licensing, essential services and public health management.

Under the parking section, the customers have the option to pay for daily parking, seasonal parking, off-street parking a well as reserved parking.

To create an account, a customer is required to register with their National or Alien ID number, KRA PIN and other details for validation and account security purposes.

However, Market Cess and payment of daily on-street parking fees will not require customer account creation on NRS.

Some of the benefits of the service include:

  • Integrated customer touch points (USSD, mobile app, web portal)
  • Online Services and simplified customer interfaces to cater for different demographics
  • Inbuilt payment System that enables a customer to make payments on the system through various payment methods – Mobile money, cards, bank transfer.

NRS services are also available on USSD via *647#.

The taxman took charge of eight revenue clusters including Land Rates, Single Business Permit and Billboards & adverts from Nairobi County under the deed of transfer beginning March 2020.

In March 2021, the taxman announced that it had launched a door-to-door crackdown on Nairobi businesses. The exercise targeted the renewal of permits among other functions.

"A team of KRA Nairobi County revenue officials is on a 10-day activation exercise across the county in conjunction with officers from the Nairobi City County Government as the renewal of county permits and licenses continues.

"KRA is collecting revenue pursuant to the deed of transfer appointing KRA as the principal revenue collecting agent for the county," read the statement in part.
