Passengers have lamented on the disruption caused by a section of Waiyaki way that was closed due to the ongoing construction of the Nairobi Expressway.

Kenya National Highways Authority(KeNHA) had announced that the ramp that links Waiyaki Way to Forest Road would be closed for 34 days beginning Monday, June 28.

This has led Nairobi residents who normally use the Waiyaki way route to lament the situation citing delays caused by traffic.

Further, Public Service Vehicles (PSVs) are opting for alternative routes thereby hampering passengers' normal day-to-day schedule.

"It's very unfair, in my case,  I boarded a PSV plying the Waiyaki way route. Unfortunately, we found ourselves at the Lower Kabete route and ended up at the Kangemi flyover.

"This caused a raucous as we had to board another matatu to connect to Waiyaki way route and the whole ordeal took almost 2 hours, " one passenger spoke to Kenyans.co.ke

Another passenger pointed out that they were forced to take two matatus, one from Nairobi Central Business District (CBD) to Chiromo and then another one opposite The Mall along Waiyaki way, in order to get to their designated area.

The closure has also led to confusion for the majority of passengers who will have to bear with the traffic menace, especially during peak hours.

Reports showed that other commuters were forced to pay Ksh200 or Ksh300 as opposed to the normal rate of Ksh50 or Ksh100.

This has escalated the situation for Nairobi commuters who are in a rush to beat traffic and get to work on time.

"I've never been to work on time since they closed a section of the Waiyaki way route," one commuter whose destination is at ABC Place, Westlands affirmed to this writer.

The majority of commuters have raised concerns regarding the construction of the Nairobi Expressway which has ended up increasing traffic menace. The roads affected primarily include Mombasa Road, Uhuru Highway, and Waiyaki Way.

Further, other passengers also raised alarm on the sparks which fly onto the road due to the construction works.

The uproar caused KeNHA to direct the expressway contractor to implement a better traffic management system in order to ease the traffic situation.
