The looming impeachment of Interior Cabinet Secretary Fred Matiang'i gained traction but MPs are divided over the move.

Speaking to the press at Parliament buildings on Thursday, July 8, Embakasi East MP Babu Owino challenged lawmakers who want to oust Matiang'i to present the motion in the August House.

Babu Owino claimed that MPs pushing for the Interior CS impeachment are Deputy President William Ruto's allies accusing them of making up charges against the Minister.

He warned the legislators noting that Matiang'i was appointed by President Uhuru Kenyatta to execute certain duties in line with the Head of State's vision.

"... Dr Matiang'i was appointed by the president to execute his duties inherently but coming up with made-up issues that Dr Matiang'i is not attending committee meetings and that is the sole reason for the impeachment that doesn't hold water," Owino stated.

"This gang is led by Honorable Mohamed Ali from Nyali and we are telling them that we will build a separate Parliament for him so that he can make noise there," he added.

Babu stated that CS Matiang'i has been protecting parliament which also consists of the team that also wants to impeach him.

He further claimed that some of the MPs plotting to oust the Interior CS have been moving around in senior government offices demanding bribes and threatening public officers with impeachment.

"We know that it is a team consisting of extortionists moving from one office to the other they want to be given brown envelops... they want to defraud some of the members of the executive failure to which they threaten them with impeachment motions," the Embakassi MP stated.

Reports emerged in May 2021, of a looming impeachment against Interior CS Matiang'i who fell out with a number of MPs allied to ODM Leader Raila Odinga and DP Ruto.

On May 19, 2021, Kapseret MP Oscar Sudi announced that he was confident that the no-nonsense CS would be impeached.

Since the introduction of the office of the Cabinet Secretary, only two CSs have faced impeachments - Anne Waiguru (2014) and Jacob Kaimenyi (2015). Both motions were unsuccessful.
