A report by Daily Nation on Thursday, July 8, indicated that the billionaire kingmaker was ready to take on political enigma Raila Odinga for the party's top spot.

"As an ODM life member, I have what it takes to lead the party and the country, into the future," the billionaire was quoted by the publication.

Wanjigi, who has been a silent actor in Kenya's politics, confirmed that he would be active and would not play the role of a Kingmaker anymore.

He has been a political financier with Odinga, President Uhuru Kenyatta and Deputy President William Ruto being among his clients.

A section of activists argued that it was a matter of time before Wanjigi declared his interest in Kenyan politics following that his father, Maina Wanjigi, was a renowned politician.

"Maybe the time has come to say, what I can do for other people, I can also do it for myself and he comes from a political family. His father was a politician for a long time, an MP for Kamukunji and CS," political analyst Barack Muluka told Kenyans.co.ke.

"Once you have politics in the family, people will always want to come out and try," he added.

His declaration comes at a time the ODM party is trying to merge with Jubilee Party to have one candidate presented for the presidency.

Odinga, on the other hand, is yet to declare his interests for the seat although political analysts speculate that the race will involve the former premier battling it out with DP Ruto.

ODM Party had asked interested Presidential aspirants to make an application for a competitive consideration after paying a fee of Ksh1 million.

In an advert, in local newspapers, the elections board chairperson Catherine Mumma told candidates that the fee was non-refundable.

She further stated that the money was to be paid to the ODM’s bank account and the applicant should present evidence of the payment to the party’s headquarters.
