Two people were arrested on Saturday, July 31, for allegedly stealing Ksh5 million high-end equipment used at the World Rally Championship (WRC) event recently held in Naivasha, Nakuru county.
Reports indicated that the Safari Rally equipment, stored at the Kenya Wildlife Service Training Institute (KWSTI), was heavily guarded.
Naivasha sub-county police commander Samuel Waweru alleged the plot to be an inside job questioning how the equipment could mysteriously disappear from the storage yard.
Waweru added that the two suspects would be arraigned after police complete the investigations.
“The two are assisting the police with the investigations,” the police boss stated.
KWSTI was at the heart of the WRC event - housing valuable equipment. Further, the President's pavilion was among the structures put up at the institute.
During the final day of WRC on Sunday, June 27, President Uhuru Kenyatta awarded the winners of the event. He also announced that the country would host the rally for the next five years.
"In this regard, my Administration will immediately start preparations for the next Safari Rally event, and I commit the required financial investment towards another successful championship in Kenya," Uhuru stated during the event.
The event, saw scores of fans pour in droves in Naivasha in order to witness the spectacle as WRC had resumed back to the country after a 19-year-hiatus.
This culminated in a three-day competition where the top-tier drivers battled it out to see who would emerge atop the pack.
French driver Sebastian Ogier scooped the first position in the rally while Kenya's Onkar Rai managed to claim victory in the WRC Category 3.
