Kenyans have come to the rescue of a stranded Form One student by raising Ksh50,000 in just two hours.
The kind gesture by Kenyans followed a heartfelt plea by a lawyer Wahome Thuku, on the morning of August 1.
Taking to his Facebook page, Wahome pleaded with Kenyans to intervene in helping raise Ksh17,000 school fees for the stranded student about to join form one.
The beneficiary student, an adopted daughter of Dorcas Mallei, Wahome's colleague, is set to join Form One at St George's High School in Nairobi on Monday, July 2.
Two hours after the lawyer put up the post, Kenyans rushed to the student's rescue, raising the required Ksh17,000, and surpassed the target, giving over Ksh50,000.
Wahome had earlier indicated that the student's mother has serious lupus and was under significant stress in trying to raise the money. Kenyans sympathized with Mallei's plight.
The lawyer had taken the responsibility of raising the initial fees but fell short by Ksh17,000, prompting him to seek extrinsic help by asking his Facebook followers to intervene.
"You remember last month we raised for her all her school fees for one year over 53k, bought all her uniforms and other personal effects including books over 45k. We stopped there for a breather," wrote Wahome in his initial Facebook post.
He pleaded with Kenyans to contribute what they could and promised to notify them when the target is hit. "For now we do this for the final stretch..50bob, 100bob, 200bob, 500bob, 1000....more. When we hit the target, I will let you know," assured Wahome.
The lawyer came back two hours later with good news aimed at his followers on Facebook, revealing that their contribution had surpassed the required target amount.
"Two hours ago I requested you to contribute 17k for the daughter of Dorcas Mallei to enable her get to school tomorrow. You have contributed over 50k. You are just a blessed community all of you," wrote the lawyer.
He thanked the contributors and urged them to continue contributing, as the student has the next four years ahead of her, requiring their input.
The student is set to join Form One starting Monday, and will now join other candidates who sat their Kenya Certificate of Primary Education (KCPE) exam in March.
