Members of Parliament now want an ultra-modern gym, steam bath, massage spa, and sauna installed in the house.

MPs want the Parliamentary Service Commission (PSC) to implement the raft of changes in the parliamentary building in order to make their legislative functions easier to execute.

The lawmakers want their employers to fast-track the replacement of the current steam baths and saunas with new steam generating units as well as heat-generating systems.

The committee, chaired by Ezekiel Machogu, also wants massage rooms, barber, and salon areas to be refurbished to create additional workstations. They have recommended youthful staffers to be hired as masseurs and reflexologists. They want the staff hired on a five-year renewable contract based on performance.

The committee, in their report, is pushing for air conditioners in Parliament replaced with new hyper filters. All these demands are meant to create an ample working environment for them.

The demand list also includes bathrooms fitted with modern gypsum, shower heads and Muslim-friendly toilets. The committee is also rooting for internet connectivity at the reception area and the fitting of electric-controlled doors.

They also want PSC to set up a health center in the Parliament. According to the committee, the health center should be fully equipped with examination rooms with sufficient privacy.

It should also have a fully equipped laboratory, pharmacy, specialised clinics to manage dental, optical, ear, nose, and throat as well as a mental health unit.

"The Parliamentary Service Commission should establish a Parliamentary Health Unit within the Parliament with clinical and public health sections and a health club," the committee stated in its report.

The report said that the current health center is in dire need of renovations to fit their standards and conform to the health protocols.

The health center was shut down following the surge in Covid-19 numbers in the country since March 2020.
