President Uhuru Kenyatta on Tuesday, August 31, mourned the death of Peris Muthoni Kimathi, the daughter of decorated freedom fighter, Dedan Kimathi.

In his message of condolences to Mama Mukami Kimathi, the Head of State described the late Muthoni as a cheerful person and a strong pillar to the family of the late freedom fighter.

Muthoni died on Sunday, August 29, after a prolonged illness.

"It is unfortunate that we have lost Muthoni Kimathi to the cruel hand of death at a time when her family, especially Mama Mukami Kimathi, needed her the most as a close caregiver," the President mourned the freedom fighter's daughter.

The President described the deceased as a family-dedicated person who was committed to taking care of his mother and widow to the late Kimathi.

"Muthoni was always beside Mama Mukami Kimathi, taking care of her and ensuring she is well-attended to. Her death is a big blow to Dedan Kimathi's family, especially to Mama Mukami, and I pray that God gives them comfort during this difficult period," the President mourned.

Muthoni is one of Dedan Kimathi's four children.

Dedan Kimathi, born Kimathi wa Waciuri in what was then British Kenya, was the senior military and spiritual leader of the Mau Mau uprising.

He led the armed military struggle against the British colonial regime in Kenya in the 1950s until his capture in 1956 and execution in 1957.

Kenyan nationalists view him as a hero of the Kenyan freedom struggle against British colonial rule.
