Fifty prison warders drawn from nine correctional facilities in Nairobi County will undergo film production training.

In collaboration with the Training of Trainer(TOT), Kenya Film Commission has officially launched the program today, September 9.

The programme will ensure that the warders are equipped with the skills necessary for film production during the three weeks of training.

The programme is a corporate social responsibility from Kenya Film Commission(KFC), as it seeks to promote the integration of filmmaking in the prisons of Kenya.

“The warders will undergo a three-week Capacity Building workshop, where they'll be trained on basic film production skills,” KFC commented.

Prison facilities have focused more on technical skills with some basic soft skills of computer training.

The move will see prisoners in the correctional facilities get professional training on filmmaking from the wardens after their workshop.

At the beginning of the month,  KFC received a Netflix Sub-saharan team, who are eyeing the film industry creatives across the country.

The integration of filmmaking in prisons is seen as a move to ensure all Kenyan stories get acknowledged, following Netflix interests in the industry of Kenya.

"The short story is we’re here to listen and learn from the various valued local stakeholders in the Kenyan film industry. As part of our strategy in every market, we’ve focused on the world,"  said Ben Amadasun, the Director of Africa Originals & Acquisitions at Netflix when his team recently visited Kenya.

Amadasun said they first started by learning more about the industry, how it operates and are in the process of identifying the next big stars as far as film is concerned.

“We are looking for opportunities for collaboration with local storytellers and stakeholders within the creative industry ecosystem," said Amadasun, who is also Head of Content Team for Africa, in regard to their visit.

Kenya filmmaking industry which was lagging behind continues to make great strides with the help of the Kenya Film Commission.
