The Mount Kenya Unity Forum, which brings together a number of party leaders from the vote-rich region, has endorsed Narc Kenya Martha Karua as their official spokesperson.
Karua was unanimously elected as the interim spokesperson by the political leaders for the Mount Kenya Region in a consultative meeting held in Naivasha.
In a press briefing held on Monday, September 20, the leaders mentioned the purpose of them coming together was to address permanent issues affecting their region ahead of the coming 2022 polls.
“For the avoidance of doubt this forum has today chosen Martha Karua to be our official convener and our spokesperson," Gatundu South MP Moses Kuria stated.
The leaders present at the Mount Kenya Unity Forum included Karua, former Kiambu Governor William Kabogo, former Agriculture CS Mwangi Kiunjuri, Kuria, among others.
“This forum is not limited to the presidential race but to unite the Central Region and the diaspora. It is not a short-lived forum but one that will outlive us,” Martha Karua noted.
The leaders, drawn from various parts of the Mount Kenya Region, indicated they were working on a blueprint that would be served to all presidential candidates seeking votes in the region.
The leaders highlighted that the forum was focusing on about four priority issues that being defending democracy and multipartyism, ensuring security for both people and property, equal representation and equity in resource allocation and decision making.
Prior to the Naivasha meeting, Karua had met Kuria and Kiunjuri and together they publicised their unity of purpose, adding they were committed to working together on issues affecting Mt Kenya and the nation “irrespective of our political affiliation.”
They announced a meeting would be held in Limuru before the end of 2021 to come up with a way forward for the region in President Uhuru Kenyatta's succession race.
This new development is now focusing on the politics of the region, which has continued to shape in recent days, with major changes and divisions emerging from the region.
Earlier on, the leaders had come together they publicised their unity of purpose, promising to work together despite being in different political parties ahead of the 2022 General Election.
“We are committed to multipartyism. No one is being asked to leave their party unless they wish to do so. We will have many parties but unity of purpose,” the Narc Kenya boss noted.
