Detectives are investigating the death of a first-year student at Laikipia University, who was fatally stabbed inside the university's main campus.

According to the police, the heinous act was committed by a non-student.

Witnesses who spoke to the media stated that they heard screams coming from one of the hostels, and upon rushing to the scene, they found the girl in an unconscious state with deep cuts.

The suspect, who attempted to turn the knife on himself was, however, pounced on by the angry neighbours who bayed for his blood.

Police officers, in response to a distress call, rushed in to save the suspect from the neighbours' wrath.

The body of the deceased's body was moved to Nyahururu County referral hospital mortuary as investigations commenced.

A cleaner, who works at the university, stated that the man had been banned by the hostel's management from trespassing around the campus the previous week.

This was after the girlfriend had raised an alarm to the hostel's management, claiming that the man attempted to force himself on her.

Police are trying to discover how the man, who had travelled from Nakuru, infiltrated the campus undetected and committed the act.

Further, they seek to investigate why the man attacked his roommate's girlfriend.
