Protests erupted in Moi University on Monday, October 25, after lecturers took to the streets to make their grievances public.

Speaking to the media, a unionist lamented that the teaching staff had not been paid for the last three months while the school's farm workers were yet to receive their 13 months salary.

The lecturers called on the government to listen to their plight, failure to which they would not go back to class.

"We are here today because we want to get justice. As it is, the donkey is tired (sic). Enough is enough," one of the unionist stated.

The tutors demanded University Vice Chancellor Isaac Kosgey's audience, saying that he ought to explain why they had not been paid.

In addition, they demanded the ouster of the University's leadership.

Police officers had to be deployed to contain the situation.

It is not the first time time dons at the Moi University are up in arms over delayed and unpaid salaries. They downed their tools on February 2021, demanding 2020 salary arrears before signing a new contract.

Yet again, in March 2021, Moi University students went on strike citing delays in the disbursement of funds by the Higher Education Loans Board (HELB).

The students stated that lack of the HELB funds had left many of them starving.

At the time, HELB Chief Executive Officer Charles Ringera blamed the treasury for not releasing the funds.
