High School students from a school in Migori County have warmed the hearts of two of their colleagues after contributing to their school fees.

A report by Citizen TV on Tuesday, October 26, indicated that the students from Kanyawanga High School identified their most needy colleagues and offered to help keep them in school.

A teacher at the school also revealed that the students hold an annual programme of contributing food stuffs and basic needs which they then distribute to orphaned children's homes around the county.

"This is an initiative of these students, the Kanyawanga Community Support Group. These boys have been in this activity for some time now."

"For this particular programme, the boys collected themselves and identified activities that they wanted to carry out this year. They decided when to identify very needy boys to pay school fees for and also to go and visit children's home," he explained.

Charles Richard, a student at the school, noted that the learners' body always runs background research on needy students before determining who to support.

"We usually identify a boy who is needy at home, and also at school. We assess how he is doing and will interview him about his home situation," explained Richard.

This comes even as the cost of living becomes unmanageable across the country with school principals vowing to send students home for school fees.

In a notice, National Government Constituencies Development Fund (NG-CDF) noted that receives an average of five million applications for bursaries.

The government, on the other hand, only awarded 9,000 scholarships to students although it received 54,000 applications this year.

In mid-October, parents and school heads clashed over claims that the latter had increased school fees over fictitious charges.

Parents decried about students being sent home over school fees arrears despite the Ministry of Education cautioning school heads against doing the same.
