A number of vehicles and motorcycles were on Tuesday, October 26, impounded in Embu Town by police officers who had mounted a crackdown on motorists.

Eastern Region Traffic Commander Jane Kuria stated the crackdown was targeting heavy commercial vehicles and boda boda operators.

Kuria noted that most of the vehicles that had been impounded had defective speed governors. Motorcycles, on the other hand, lacked insurance, driving license and protective gear.

“We do not want to create a situation where we will have to put some people out of business and our humble appeal to motorists is to ensure their vehicles are in good order,” she stated.

Kuria added that 789 fatalities from road carnage had been recorded since 2019 in the area.

In that regard, the authorities vowed to strictly ensure that laid out rules were adhered to.

Those arrested will be arraigned in court on Wednesday, October 27.

Impounded vehicles and motorcycles will be released subject to compliance of all the regulations.

According to statistics by NTSA released in September 2021, cases of road accidents in 2021 have risen compared to a similar period last year.

The survey indicated that fatalities had increased by 25 percent as of September 20, 2021.

The accidents were attributed to reckless driving, dangerous overtaking, drunk driving, drunk walking, drunk riding, failure to use helmets among other issues.

NTSA called upon all Kenyan road users to follow all the traffic rules and regulations in order to tame the rising number of accidents in the country.
