The Independent Electoral and Boundaries Commission (IEBC) has gifted a voter who turned up for registration exercise while riding on a wheelbarrow.

The middle-aged lady, who acquired her National Identification card early this year, requested her family to take her for voter registration.

Being physically challenged, the lady identified as Selifa Opanda, was wheeled on a wheelbarrow to an IEBC registration center in Emuhaya Constituency, Vihiga County.

She was pushed by a young man who identified himself as her uncle.

Her desire to be register as a voter despite being physically challenged touched the IEBC officials who eventually came to her rescue.

The officials shared the pictures of the lady while riding on the wheelbarrow on their social media pages and within hours they managed to raise funds to buy her a wheelchair and some household items.

They IEBC officials further paid her a visit at their homestead where she lives with her mother.

The lady expressed gratitude stating that she will not only be able to vote but will also be able to move around freely and on her own without being wheeled on a wheelbarrow again.

This act of kindness comes just hours after the court extended the voter registration exercise.

The High Court sitting in Eldoret extended the voter registration exercise by one week pending the hearing of a case filed by a voter from Uasin Gishu County.

Delivering his verdict, Justice Eric Ogolla directed the exercise that was slated to end on Tuesday, November 2 after a 30-day run, be extended to Tuesday, November 9, 2021.

So far, only 800,000 new voters have been registered in the Nationwide exercise that has been running for the last three weeks.
