The Kenya National Highways Authority (KeNHA) has issued an update on the ongoing construction of the Nairobi Expressway affecting the flow of traffic on Mombasa Road and Waiyaki Way.
Through a public notice released on Wednesday, November 3, KeNHA informed motorists that traffic disruptions will continue being witnessed in some areas especially along Mombasa Road.
In particular, the authority states that along Mombasa Road, the disruption will continue along the General Motors (GM) area. This is because of the ongoing installation of a new footbridge in that area and getting rid of the old one.
Also, Bunyala Roundabout will experience some disruption because of the active construction status of the Nairobi Expressway along that area.
They have also warned motorists to exercise caution, especially during rainy season. KeNHA has noted that the onset of rains may affect the normal flow of traffic.
"The onset of rains may cause disruptions to the normal traffic flow. Motorists are therefore urged to continue exercising caution and road courtesy as that will help manage traffic better," part of their notice read.
However, they have set new dates for the reopening of some closed sections of the road affected by Nairobi Expressway construction. The Haile Selassie to University Way Roundabout is set to be to reopened for motorists starting December 15, with the elevated section along that route standing at 87.7% complete.
The sections which are complete and are ready to use include Mlolongo Weighbridge to KAPA Industries, Gateway Mall to Hilton Gardens, Sameer Park to Southern Bypass, and David Osieli Road linking Aga Khan School.
KeNHA has assured motorists that the construction of the Expressway is in top gear and everything is being done to complete the project as scheduled.
"Progress of construction of the Operation and Monitoring Centre now stands at 98 % and is set to be complete ahead of the road works. This Centre will help manage and maintain the road once it is operational . Once operational, it is hoped that more staff will be employed beyond the current engagement," KENHA remarked.
KeNHA further revealed that the company building the state-of-the-art road project has so far employed 4,000 people.
"The project financing and implementing company, Moja Expressway Company, has employed over 4,000 Kenyans across different cadres besides using locally procured tons of construction materials required for the project."
