A journalist attached to NTV is nursing injuries after he was attacked by an angry mob while on an assignment.
Zacchaeus Mwasame was attacked by goons on Sunday, November 7, at Bukhungu Stadium in Kakamega County.
The reporter had been assigned to cover a match between Kakamega Homeboyz and Bandari FC.
Chaos broke out at the tail-end of the game after Kakamega Homeboyz lost a 93rd-minute penalty against the away team.
In reaction to the controversial penalty, one of the Bandari FC players attacked the referee of the match in a clip that has since gone viral.
The journalist was recording the confrontation when he was attacked by Homeboyz fans who disregarded his press card.
In the clip seen by Kenyans.co.ke, more than 13 goons are seen mercilessly descending on the journalist.
Mwasame sustained injuries and was taken to Kakamega Referral Hospital where he was treated before being discharged shortly after.
According to Article19.org, a global organisation that monitors freedom of expression, attacks against journalists in Kenya have continued to rise.
On 24 April 2021, police beat and injured nine journalists in Makumi, Mbeere South, Embu County, who were covering a story regarding the forceful eviction by police officers.
The dispute at the time was between the area residents and Tana and Athi River Development Authority (TARDA).
In May 2021, a photojournalist, Mariel Müller, attached to German broadcaster DW was also attacked by Kenyan police while on assignment in Kenya.
The officers threw teargas canisters at the reporter with one canister grazing her and a second injuring her leg.
