Behind every successful woman, there is a woman, this is a new phrase coined by Kenya's Chief Justice Martha Karambu Koome's chambers.

CJ Koome prides herself in having a powerhouse that compliments and makes possible her day-to-day activities successful within the legal precincts.

That powerful aide is known as Rose Wachuka Macharia. The 35-year-old is serving as the Chief of Staff in the Office of the Chief Justice.

Wachuka describes the opportunity to serve under CJ Koome as her childhood dream.  She developed that passion to serve in that position at the age of 10.

She pursued law with just one goal in mind; to champion for social justice in the country and use her position to empower other young people seeking role models.

“From when I was a child growing up in Ol Kalou in Nyandarua County, I knew I wanted to serve. That is the currency of my satisfaction, not even money. It is about making an impact in the life of another person, she stated in a past interview.

Wachuka compares her role in CJ Koome's office as that of a DJ. She makes sure that everything stays in order and all activities in line with that powerful office are well adhered to.

Her roles include directing workflows, communication, and performance management, and ensuring that the Chief Justice's priorities are understood, planned for, and realised.

Others include taking on a political advisory role to enhance cooperation and partnership between the office of the Chief Justice, the Presidency, and the Office of Speakers of the National Assembly and Senate.

Wachuka's Qualifications and Career

Wachuka graduated with a Bachelor’s degree in law from Moi University and started her career as a trainee arbitrator in 2009. She got her first job with United Nations Environmental Programme (UNDP).

She hit another personal major milestone after being appointed a law clerk in the Supreme Court of Kenya,  then an advisor before becoming a Chief of Staff in the ministries of Sports and Education.

Her academic repertoire also reads a Master’s of Public Policy from the University of Oxford, executive education from Harvard Kennedy School and the Aga Khan University, a Master of Arts in International Relations from the United States International University as well as being an advocate of the High Court, and an associate of the Chartered Institute of Arbitrators.

With her passion for reading and exploring different written articles, Wachuka described the opportunity to serve under CJ Koome as the most important part of her career.

Her career progress is pegged on her life virtues that include gratitude, integrity, courage, and discipline.

“We (young women) sometimes miss many opportunities because we are afraid to get into rooms and express ourselves and go after things we feel are important. Without integrity and discipline, you cannot be effective," she stated during an interview with Business Daily after being ranked top 40 under 40.
