Details have now emerged that miners who got trapped in the collapsed Siaya mine ignored red alerts from a minor, who survived the tragedy.

Bernand Ochieng, who is nursing injuries at a local hospital, revealed that he noticed soil particles falling from the walls of the mine and notified his seniors.

However, the supervisor and other senior miners refuted his claims, terming him a complainer while urging him to quit if he was not comfortable with the work.

The minor stated that he sent the warning at around 9 o'clock in the morning when the miners had taken a tea break.

Ochieng, who was speaking from his hospital bed at Bondo Sub County Hospital, however, was lucky to escape with serious multiple injuries.

Ochieng and one of his colleagues were not directly hit by walls that began curving in from one side, trapping those who were still mining.

Details have also emerged that out of the four who are still trapped in the rumble, one is yet to be accounted for.

The three are still communicating with the rescuers using pipes, urging the government to expediate the process of rescuing them as they are running out of energy and risk suffocation and starvation.

They decry high temperatures and low oxygen levels as the major challenges they are facing. Meanwhile, relatives and friends of the four are still camping at the banks of the mine hoping that their loved ones will come out alive.

The accident occurred on Thursday, December 2, when mine walls curved in, trapping eight people and two others escaping with injuries.

One body was retrieved on Saturday, December 4, while the other three came out alive on diverse dates between Thursday and Monday evening.

The survivors stated that the pumped oxygen aided their survival while under the mine.

Rescue operation continues at the site with the excavators having abandoned the mission due to the delicacy of the soil forcing tens of residents and other miners to scoop soil manually to try and bring their colleagues alive.
