The parents of two Chogoria High School students, who passed away on December 18, 2021 following a grisly accident, have recounted their devastation after they received a phone call detailing the troubling news.

Lucy Mburu, the mother of one of the deceased students, Caroline Wangu, disclosed that she fell sick and was rushed to hospital after learning that her daughter was involved in an accident.

On his part, James Mburu, the father to the 17-year-old girl, narrated that they were not informed about their daughter dying on the spot. The mourning parents got wind of the information later.

"We went to the hospital and tried to enquire where they could be. I was called and told to go and identify her body," the father disclosed.

The family mourned Caroline as an obedient, faithful and hard-working student and planned to conduct her burial ceremony on Thursday, December 23.

On the fateful day, Caroline was seated with her close friend Joy Bernice, who also succumbed to injuries following the accident. Bernice, Caroline, another student and the driver of the matatu they were travelling in passed away after crashing into a lorry ferrying potatoes at Kambiti along the Kenol-Makutano Road.

Bernice kin eulogised her as a girl who was cheerful and full of life.

"Her dad and mum are devastated, they need all the prayers and support," Joyce Martha, Bernice's relative stated.

The families appealed to motorists to be more careful on the roads especially during this festive season.

The lorry driver, who survived the ordeal, narrated that the accident occurred rapidly, giving him little chance to salvage the situation.

“The matatu was trying to overtake a trailer. There were a couple of cars ahead of the trailer as well.

“I saw the (matatu) driver trying to sneak from behind the trailer attempting to overtake, but at first I didn’t have flash lights to try and stop him,” he recalled.

He tried veering off the road in an attempt to evade the oncoming danger but couldn’t.

A post-mortem will be conducted on Monday at the General Kago Funeral Home before their burials.
