President Uhuru Kenyatta has praised Loreto Sisters and gifted them Ksh10 million for their achievements in both the health and education sectors.

Uhuru, through Head of Public Service Joseph Kinyua, gave Ksh10 million to the group in an event held on Saturday, January 30, to celebrate 100 years since its founding.

Kinyua noted that the service provided by the organisation is unmatched and that it uplifted many vulnerable lives across the country.

Uhuru further challenged the group to keep expanding its services in the two sectors promising that the state would collaborate with the group to admit vulnerable students in the community.

"It is now up to you, the Loreto Sisters, to patiently and purposely use this grounds for the betterment of the current generations, the preservations of the traditions of the past generations and the hope for the future generations.

"What the President would want to do is to see partnership even with the Ministry of Sports and Culture for the purpose of ensuring that this remains a heritage that even the future generations will enjoy," stated Kinyua on behalf of the President.

The Head of State can attest to the crucial role the organisation plays in the society having attended Loreto Convent himself, where he was moulded into the person he is today.

He spent two years as a pupil of the then mixed primary school where he learned the value of hard work and respect for others.

In his message, Uhuru promised to work closely with the school to admit children from vulnerable families at the Coast Region as soon as May 2022. The funds would form part of the institution's endowment fund.

In January 2021, the Head of State gave Ksh10 million for the construction of a new school in Kilifi under the well known brand to accommodate 500 girls.

“My humble request to the Loreto Sisters is to preserve the history, icons, and artefacts of Loreto at Loreto Msongari. This way we will afford to give future generations the full breadth and perspective of the great story that is Loreto," he noted at the time.

After starting his basic education at Loreto Convent, Uhuru was transferred to St. Mary's School in Nairobi where he completed his Primary and Secondary School Education.

Other notable alumni at the historic institution include Nobel Laureate Wangari Maathai, media personality Julie Gichuru, Supreme Court judge Njoki Ndung'u, among others.
