Motorists will be forced to dig deeper into their pockets in order to pay for parking fees after City Hall rolled out a new fee structure in its bid to increase its revenue streams.
This is according to the amended Nairobi City County Finance Bill 2021, which was recently approved in the city's county Assembly.
Malls and big establishments offering parking fees will have to part with an average of Ksh500,000 and Ksh2 million on an annual basis to be remitted as a single business permit.
Further, the buildings with a capacity of 50 vehicles will have to pay Ksh500,000 annually while the businesses can accommodate more than 100 vehicles will bear the burden of paying Ksh2 million.
Nairobi County Assembly Budget and Appropriations Committee chairperson, Robert Mbatia, pointed out that they did not discourage businesses to offer private parking as much as public parking spaces are a mandate of the county government.
“We have seen businesses offering their spaces for private parking. As much as we encourage it, this is the sole work of the Nairobi Government to give parking services. It is for this reason that we introduced the new single business permit (SBP) for such establishments,” Mbatia stated.
Further, Mbatia noted that the businesses seeking to offer private parking services ought to obtain a license from City Hall.
"This means that anybody offering parking services will now have to get a license from the county government because that (offering parking services) is like operating a business and so that is the charge for the business," the committee chairperson reiterated.
He added that the move is aimed at increasing the county government's revenue in order to meet its target of Ksh19.8 billion in the Financial Year 2021/22.
Mbatia had initially tabled recommendations in the charges for motorists planning to use the Nairobi Metropolitan Services (NMS) terminals.
PSVs would pay from Ksh50 to Ksh200 whereby matatus carrying up to 13 passengers pay Ksh50 per entry, 42-seaters would be expected to pay Ksh100 while 43 seaters and above would part with Ksh200 and above.
Boda boda operators would be charged Ksh20 per entry while taxis will pay Ksh50.
