The United Nations has issued a five-day traffic alert in Nairobi's Gigiri area between Monday, February 28, and Friday, March 4.
In a statement seen by Kenyans.co.ke, the United Nations Office at Nairobi (UNON) issued a traffic advisory to the residents living in Kenya's capital and particularly around its headquarters.
Gigiri and Runda areas, and particularly the UN Avenue will be most affected by the traffic build-up.
"The United Nations Office at Nairobi (UNON) wishes to advise members of the general public, particularly its Gigiri and Runda neighbours that heavy and continuous traffic delays are expected in the area," read the statement in part.
UNON explained that the traffic will be as a result of the convention of the UN Environmental Assembly, the world's highest environmental decision-making body. The event coincides with the United Nations Environmental Programme (UNEP's) 50th anniversary.
The events will bring together representatives of the 193 member states of the UN, businesses and civil society and other stakeholders to agree on policies on the world's most pressing environmental challenges.
In line with this, there will be a traffic build-up in the area to allow free movement of the assembly attendees. Consequently, motorists have been advised to use other roads or other means of transport.
"In view of the above, we encourage those who normally use the UN Avenue route to seek alternative routes and/or use other means of transportation. We express our sincere gratitude in advance for your understanding," read the statement.
The convention, dubbed UNEA-5, will centre around the theme: “Strengthening Actions for Nature to Achieve the Sustainable Development Goals.” It will highlight the pivotal role nature plays in the social, economic and environmental sustainable development.
It will also provide a platform for the Member States to share best practices for sustainability and create momentum for governments to build on and catalyze impact on multilateral environmental efforts to protect and restore the natural world on which our economies and societies depend.
UNEA-5, will run between February 28 and March 2 after which the Assembly will hold a Special Session between March 3 and 4 devoted to the commemoration of the 50th anniversary of UNEP which was established in 1972.
