Chief Justice Martha Koome has shown her philanthropic side after her and her family began constructing decent houses for vulnerable families.

On Tuesday, March 2, the President of the Supreme Court launched the exercise aimed at providing shelter to 10 families in Machakos County.

She is now a supporter of the Habitat for Humanity Kenya Leader’s Build who are putting up 40 houses for the families.

In her statement, Koome revealed that the organisation should be lauded, noting that the Judiciary had been working towards achieving access for all.

“Habitat for Humanity should be lauded for this milestone, which resonates with the Constitution of Kenya 2010 and the Social Transformation Through Access (STAJ) Vision that is being pursued by the Judiciary,” stated Koome.

A report by Capital FM indicated that Koome and her husband Koome Kiragu have been part of the supporters of the organisation since the 1990s.

They have helped put up houses for individuals both in Kenya and other countries such as Cambodia.

Frank Ireri, the Board Chairman Habitat for Humanity Kenya hailed the CJ for her noble move noting that it was helping alleviate poverty.

“The Chief Justice has led by example, putting a smile on a vulnerable family with a decent house. We can all do in our small ways, by buying a nail, iron sheets and ultimately building a full house,” stated Ireri.

The CJ is also known for her charity work in other capacities and was in 2020 recognised by the United Nations for advocacy of the rights of children in the justice system.

She was the runner up in that year's Person of the Year Award and was presented with a Certificate of Commendation.

At the time, she served as the Chairperson of Kenya’s Special Task Force on Children Matters and Court of Appeal judge.
