Ben Mulwa, the former spokesperson to ex-Nairobi Governor Mike Sonko, has announced his bid to contest for Nairobi governorship in the 2022 General Election.

Taking to his social media accounts on Tuesday, March 8, Mulwa announced that he would vie on a Wiper party ticket.

Speaking to Kenyans.co.ke, Mulwa confirmed that his vast experience working in the county government gave him an edge in transforming the lives of Nairobi residents should he become the Capital City's next Chief Executive Officer.

"I do my businesses around Nairobi and have had the privilege to work with the county government specifically in the office of the Governor and one of the greatest tragedies we face is that Nairobi continues to suffer from leadership instability arising from partisan interest that have been pushing for the agenda of Nairobi," he stated.

Mulwa was at the office of the county government for a period of three years, from September 2017 to December 2020- before Sonko's reign came to an end following his impeachment by Members of the County Assembly. The ouster of Sonko was later upheld by the Senate and efforts to reverse the decision through the corridors of justice hit a dead end.

Since Sonko was kicked out of City Hall, Mulwa has maintained a low profile, keeping off the media. He has previously worked for  Knowledge Transfer Technologies Limited as a lead consultant.

He now joins a growing list of politicians, both seasoned and newbies who have declared interest in the Nairobi gubernatorial race. They include Nairobi Senator Johnson Sakaja, Kenya Kwanza's Bishop Margaret Wanjiru, and Businesswoman Agnes Kagure.

Others in the race include the President of the Kenya National Chamber of Commerce and Industry (KNCCI) Richard Ngatia and Westlands MP Tim Wanyonyi.

His former boss, Sonko, has also thrown his hat into the ring, seeking a re-election of what would be his second term after his initial run was curtailed due to allegations of gross misconduct and abuse of office.

In the Kenya Kwanza coalition, frontrunners include Sakaja and Wanjiru while the Azimio la Umoja movement will see a friendly fire during the nominations phase as both ODM and Jubilee look to front a joint candidate. However, ODM leader Raila Odinga and Deputy President William Ruto will trade carefully to avert possible fallout and sibling rivalry.
