A police officer tasked with manning a Kenya Certificate of Secondary Education (KCSE) exam centre was on Tuesday, March 15, arrested after he fled.

In a police statement seen by Kenyans.co.ke, the officer, a police constable went missing from his station at Koiban Secondary School about 2.00p.m  to conduct an illegal raid  in Kimngoror area Nandi County.

The officer stationed at Kamungei  Police Post allegedly went to a homestead one kilometre away to carry out an operation targeting illicit brewers.

The police constable began ransacking the compound in what was established to be an unsanctioned raid. The owner of the homestead was opposed to the actions of the uninvited officer, leading to a commotion.

The melee that ensued caught the attention of curious residents who arrived at the compound. Aggrieved by the officer's raid of their neighbour's premises, they cornered him and threatened to teach him a lesson, including lynching.

The officer was rescued by the local area chief who informed the Chepterwai Police post of the dramatic turn of events, before he was apprehended for processing.

Upon interrogation, the officer failed to give a credible reason for abandoning the centre and who gave him the order to conduct the sting.

“The OCS Chepterwai Police Station rushed to the scene and upon interrogation, the officer was unable to give a sustainable account as to why he had left the exam center and who had assigned him illicit liquor operations,” the statement read in part.

Consequently, his firearm was confiscated. The case has been forwarded the Nandi County Directorate of Criminal Investigations (DCI) for further investigation.

The officer adds to the list of men in uniform who have been arrested during the KCPE and KCPE national examinations. On March 7, several police officers were apprehended and their phones confiscated after they were allegedly caught taking photos of exam papers.

Notably, the Ministry of Education has reported a number of cases of malpractices during the ongoing KCSE test. Education Cabinet Secretary Prof George Magoha pardoning two candidates who attempted to access the exam room with their phones. However, the CS noted that measures were put in place to curb cheating in national exams.
