Details of Queen Elizabeth’s Son Visit to Kenya

Details of Prince Edwards' official visit to Kenya have emerged after he arrived in the country on Wednesday, March 16.

In a statement released by the Royal Family, it was revealed that the Prince also referred to Earl of Wessex was in the country to oversee the operations of an international award that was founded by the late Prince Philip, the Duke of Edinburgh in 1956.

In Kenya, the award is known as the President's award and offers mentorship to thousands of youth who are engaged in various community-based projects.

"The Earl of Wessex is in Kenya to see the success of the award in the country and meet some of the young people currently taking part.

"His Royal Highness is Chairman of the Board of Trustees of the International Award which was founded by his father in 1956, and currently operates in more than 130 countries worldwide," read the statement.

As part of his duties on the awards board, Prince Edward will host over 40,000 youths who are part of the program and will be mentored in different areas including leadership and entrepreneurship.

Further, it was disclosed that he had already engaged some students from Dedan Kimathi University on various issues affecting the youth in Kenya, among them unemployment.

"The Earl of Wessex met 100 young from various universities and got to hear about innovation and entrepreneurship. The Duke of Edinburgh's International Award builds and empowers youth to find their purpose, passion & place in the world," the UK embassy stated.

Additionally, the prince also visited the famous Treetops in Aberdare National Park where he planted a tree next to the point where his mother, Her Majesty Queen Elizabeth II received news of her father's demise.

It was after the call in 1952, that the Queen returned to England and assumed her role as the head of the Commonwealth.

"In Aberdare Open Fields, close to Treetops where 70 years ago, the Queen received the news of her Accession. His Royal Highness planted a tree as part of The Queen’s Green Canopy initiative," read the statement in part.

On his first day, the Earl of Wessex also visited the British Army Training Unit Kenya (BATUK) in Laikipia County where British soldiers train and host military operations.

Prince Edward is the youngest child of the Queen's four children namely, Prince Charles, Princess Anne, and Prince Andrew.
