Public Facilities  Named After the First Lady Margaret Kenyatta

The first lady, Margaret Kenyatta, is known to be passionate about matters concerning healthcare. Her Beyond Zero Campaign launched in 2013 spearheaded changes in maternal and child health, contributing largely to affordable healthcare in the country. 

On Friday, March 18, she launched a hospital in Mathare North, which the Nairobi Metropolitan service renamed after her.

Herein, we compile a list of the public facilities that have been renamed after the First Lady.

Margaret Kenyatta Children's Hospital Level 6.

The children's Hospital was launched on Friday, March 18, 2022, by his Excellency President Uhuru Kenyatta in Mathare North. Margaret Kenyatta Children’s Hospital was built to relieve the overload at Mama Lucy Kibaki Hospital.

This facility is able to serve the 2.1 million people in the Eastlands area more efficiently.

Margaret Kenyatta Institute for Gender and Social Development.

On  February 9, 2022, the Ministry of Public Service and Gender Affairs unveiled a pact between the Kenya School of Government (KSG) and The First Lady’s Beyond Zero Initiative to establish the Margaret Kenyatta Institute for Gender and Social Development at Lower Kabete.

The first lady appreciated that the two organizations came together to promote Kenya’s Gender and Social development agenda through the specialized college.

“This MOU allows us to jointly utilize our collective knowledge and experience; to apply research, promote innovation, develop training and deliver outreach programs that will address issues that enable progress for our women,” Margaret elaborated.

Mama Margaret Kenyatta Hospital Level 5

Mathare Korogocho Hospital, which was renamed Mama Margaret Kenyatta Hospital, was refurbished at a whooping cost of Ksh400 million and launched on December 14, 2021.

The hospital has a bed capacity of 359 beds and a floor dedicated to bodaboda injuries. The hospital was built to decongest Mama Lucy Kibaki Hospital based in the same area.

Margaret Kenyatta Mother-Baby Wing

The construction of the state-of-the-art health facility launched on October 17, 2018, by the first lady cost Ksh550 million. The 250-bed facility championed the Universal Health Care(UHC) which aims to improve the lives of Kenyans. 

It provides a wide variety of services that include maternity, pediatric, gynaecological conditions, diagnosis for cancer, and oncology services.

The facility is currently the biggest referral facility that will be a reprieve to women and children in the Rift Valley.

Margaret Kenyatta Mother and Child Specialized Hospital

The Ksh135 million health facility was launched on December 8, 2018, by the First Lady. The facility has a nursery with two theatres, nine incubators, ultrasound and imaging facilities, aqua birth facilities, six delivery beds,80 baby cots, and a pharmacy.

It was built to facilitate the health care needs for neighbouring counties Kitui, Kajiado, Taita Taveta, and Machakos.
