A student aged 20 years old, died at a house party in Racecourse Estate after he slipped and fell off a balcony on the fifth floor on Saturday, March 19, at around 4 am.
The Daystar University student was among eight others who attended the party. His friends said that they thought he was taking a phone call when he left to stand on the balcony.
It was shortly after they heard a scream followed by a loud thud that they rushed out, only to find the deceased lying on the ground floor in a pool of blood.
Nairobi Police boss James Mugera said they briefly interrogated those present before taking the body to the mortuary.
“We suspect he was intoxicated at the time he fell but we are also investigating to establish if there were other issues that led to this tragic incident,” he said.
The family of Karanja held a requiem mass at Lavington United Church on Monday, March 22. He was celebrated as a young and promising man who passed away too soon.
“The son of our cousin has passed away after a fatal accident. Please uphold them in prayer, that the God of all comfort will grant them peace.” wrote one of his family members on Twitter.
“We will miss you. Heaven has truly gained an angel. To the family, we are sending healing prayers and comforting hugs,” added a friend.
In a similar incident in January 2022, a second-year Kirinyaga University student died on the spot after falling from the third floor of an apartment in Juja.
The student aged 20 was returning to his lover’s apartment from a drinking spree when he got into a fight with another man over a lady.
It was during the exchange that one of the men fell over the balcony to the ground floor.
In July 2021, two people also died after reportedly jumping from the seventh floor of a building in Kilimani, Nairobi during a house party
One of the duo who passed away was identified as a 23-year-old Nigerian citizen with detectives noting that 15 out of the total attendees were from the West African country.
