Just a mention of the name prison sends shivers down the spine of even the bravest of men and women. While correctional services seek to rehabilitate inmates, life behind bars leaves one with memories that forever remain etched scars of pain.

In the case of gospel singer, Sammy Boy, he went from going about his usual business to serving a life sentence at the Naivasha Maximum Prison for a crime he maintains that he never committed.

From his wife divorcing him to a tattered image, Sammy felt like his whole world was wrapped in a bubble and he couldn't find an escape route.

Speaking to Njeraini citu, Sammy noted that the incident dates back to 2015 when he agreed to host a family friend from upcountry.

Seeking to help his comrade, identified as Karanja, settle in Nairobi before finding his footing in the city, Sammy felt entitled to come to his friend's aid.

Sammy, however, noticed the piece of luggage which included laptops, phones, and other electronics but decided not to inquire about it, as it was not the first time he had hosted his friend.

The decision would ultimately come back to haunt him after he found police officers inside his compound. According to Sammy, his friend's luggage contained stolen property that belonged to a foreigner.

The musician was apprehended as police proceeded with investigations. They put out an alert on Karanja who had not been spotted for a couple of days.

However, his own admission of agreeing to host the stolen items led him to be the main suspect. He was charged with robbery with violence and handed a life sentence.

"With the would-be suspect out of the picture, the charges were pinned on me. Since I did not have a lawyer, the court convicted me for life," he stated.

His woes continued after his wife divorced him shortly after going to prison. Six years later, he appealed the case seeking for the matter to be re-investigated.

Recounting the past six years, Sammy noted that he utilised the time to spread the word of God and mentor others. Due to his teachings and sermons, he was christened teacher in jail. At the moment, he is clinging on a thread of hope, that his appeal goes through.
