A family in Mumias, Kakamega county has been left without shelter after selling off iron sheets to offset hospital bill.

Speaking to TV47, Willy Odhimbo the man who did the unthinkable, stated that he had to make the sacrifice to see his son out of the hospital.

Odhiambo’s firstborn son is battling sickle cell anemia and after treatment, he was unable to raise Ksh 10,000 for the bill.

For now, the family is confronting a sorry state of affairs, in Ingusi village, Mumias with the hope that their firstborn son will one day recover and get them out of poverty.

“He was sick and we took him to hospital, when he was discharged I was told the bill is Ksh10,000 so I didn’t know what to do because I had sent her mother to go sell our maize farm to get money for the bill,” Odhiambo explained.

Odhiambo claims that his attempts to raise the much-needed funds did not bear much as no one responded to his requests.

“I tried to request who would loan me money to pay off the bill but after visiting all the homesteads I didn’t find anyone” he narrated.

Odhiambo, his wife, and his children are now living in the roofless four-walled mud house which appears to be an abandoned house from afar.

His wife, Rose who was not present when her husband sold off the iron sheets was shocked on finding her house roofless.

“I was shocked to find my house roofless but I told God there was a reason for all these” Rose narrates.

The house is now partially covered with polythene paper with Odhiambo and his young family hoping that well-wishers come to their rescue.

The polythene roofing, as the man narrates is not safe as they get rained on, and are forced to endure the chilly nights, with the Western region currently experiencing heavy rains.
