Four Police officers and a civilian are behind bars at Loitoktok Police Station after they were arrested after being accused of kidnapping and robbing a Tanzanian tycoon.
Reports indicated that the five suspects were nabbed on Sunday, May 29, while speeding towards Loitoktok Airstrip.
The suspects are accused of kidnapping the tycoon near the Kenya-Tanzania border after which they bundled him into a car before driving to Nairobi where they allegedly extorted him a sum of Ksh 80,000.
A report by the Standard indicated that the officers used two cars, a Toyota NZE and a Mazda Demio for the operation. The cars have since been confiscated as investigations into the matter continue.
A manhunt for the suspects was launched on Sunday after the suspect traveled back to Loitoktok Police Station to report the matter.
A Police report indicated that three of the four police officers were attached to Buruburu Police Station although when contacted by Kenyans.co.ke, the bosses at the station declined to comment on the matter,
Police uniforms, among other security enforcement equipment, were recovered from the suspects.
“They had earlier been sighted at a petrol station on Loitoktok-Emali Road.
“One full set of police uniform, a pair of handcuffs and police communication gadget were recovered from the suspects,” read the police report in part.
This comes months after another set of police officers was arrested in February 2022 after being accused of arresting civilians in Kariobangi and extorting them.
The three were arrested while at the town's roundabout when residents tipped their colleagues of the illegal dealings.
At the time, the individuals were going after Kenyans who were not donning face masks and demanded a payout.
