United Democratic Alliance (UDA) Presidential running mate Rigathi Gachagua hit out at Azimio La Umoja counterpart Martha Karua after their debate on Tuesday night.

Gachagua took a swipe at Karua, claiming she was unfit for office after the seasoned politician told the moderators she buys bread for Ksh80.

Speaking in Kamacharia, Murang'a County, on Wednesday, July 20, Gachagua stated that Karua was out of touch with the basic needs of the people.

"You heard Martha say the bread she buys is Ksh80. I wondered what kind of bread that was. They want us to elect someone without an idea of what is going on," stated Gachagua.

He assured Murang'a residents that they will work to reduce the price of basic commodities such as milk, ugali flour and bread should Kenya Kwanza win the August 9 polls.

However, during the debate, the UDA running mate was also put on the spot after acknowledging he didn't know the price of kerosene which retails at Ksh127.94 per litre.

"The cost of milk today the farmer sells at Ksh42 but at the supermarket, it goes for Ksh130 or Ksh120 per litre depending on where you are. For kerosene I don't know, I don't go to the supermarket," Gachagua stated.

A spot check by Kenyans.co.ke showed that the price of Kerosene is currently listed at Ksh127.94 a litre, while milk goes for Ksh60 for 500ml and the cost of bread retails between Ksh60 to Ksh200 depending on the size, type and brand of bread.

The Mathira Member of Parliament also took a turn throwing salvos at President Uhuru Kenyatta and his family accusing them of allegedly enjoying a monopoly in the milk business.

He accused Uhuru's family of having extreme control in the milk business and promised that they will do away with such by enacting policies that fight exploitation.

"Uhuru has destroyed this country. We want him to go home and he should not tell us who to vote for. We have a problem in the milk sector because of the monopoly. They buy milk from us and process it then take it to the supermarkets and they sell it to us the way they want," Gachagua stated.

"We can't have one company that buys milk from the farmer and then proceeds to sell it at the supermarkets. That is oppressing the farmer and the consumer. We want people who buy milk to not involve themselves in selling the same at the local shops," he claimed.

Last week the company associated with the First Family sued Nyali Member of Parliament Mohamed Ali over his claims that the firm allegedly exploited milk farmers and consumers.

In the case filed before High Court judge Anthony Mrima, the company argued that the allegations by Ali were meant to ignite public resentment against it.

The firm in court papers stated that on March 3, 2022, Ali at a public rally in Nyeri claimed the company buys milk at Ksh20 goes and boils it, and then sells it back to the suppliers at Ksh120.

According to the company, this was inaccurate and a violation of its rights under Article 20, Article 33 (2) (d), and Article 27 of the Constitution.
