Migori County police boss, Mark Wanjala, confirmed that the Nyatike Parliamentary seat candidate was in detention awaiting arraignment in court.

Anyanga, who is vying on the UPIA party ticket was reported to have shot Justus Ochieng at a local pub at Lwanda Konyango, Migori County on July 23.

Police had initially confiscated his gun and 12 rounds of ammunition on the night the shooting happened.

“He (Anyanga) started threatening the victim while inside his vehicle claiming that he has been going against his political ambitions,” an eyewitness claimed.

Reports alleged that Anyanga and Ochieng were embroiled in an altercation before the Azimio candidate pulled out his firearm.

Ochieng incurred crucial injuries on his hip and was rushed to a nearby hospital where first aid was admitted.

Detectives attached to the case launched a manhunt for Anyanga, who once served as the area MP, after Ochieng's friends filed a report.

Anyanga's allies, however, dismissed the allegations claiming that the former MP acted in self-defence in what they claimed was an attempted political assassination

"We condemn the attempt to eliminate Edick Omondi Anyanga by youths well known and sponsored by his opponent.

"We thank God their plan failed miserably and Anyanga is safe," they stated in a joint statement.

The suspect is yet to address the allegations and charges levelled against him.
