Wiper deputy party leader, Farah Maalim, evaded an improvised explosive device (IED) planted on the road while on a campaign trail in Garissa County on Thursday, July 28.

The former deputy speaker of the National Assembly claimed that the device targetted his convoy headed to the Liboi region.

Security officers who gathered intelligence about the planted IED explosive halted the motorcade from triggering the device.

"Our hawk-eyed security officers got intelligence information of IEDs planted in my campaign route to Liboi. They halted my convoy, rerouted us to a safe detour and engaged the services of bomb disposal experts.

"They then detonated the IEDs with ease," Maalim, who serves as Kalonzo Musyoka's deputy at Wiper stated.

The IED explosive left a huge crater on the road after bomb experts detonated it.

Maalim has been holding a series of campaigns drumming up support for Azimio la Umoja aspirants in the region.

In 2013, he unsuccessfully vied for the National Assembly Senate Seat sponsored by the Coalition for Reform and Democracy (CORD).

"This is not a House where partisan interests and politics is going to attain, it is a small lean House that is supposed to maintain the unity of this country," Maalim explained after being cleared to contest for Senate Speakers position.

His bid was backed by Nyamira Senator Okong’o Omogeni and Wajir Senator Abdirahman Ali Hassan. But despite the support, Maalim lost the Speaker's seat to former Bungoma Governor Ken Lusaka.

Maalim resolved to continue serving along Kalonzo in national politics and was crucial in convincing the former Vice President to join Azimio La Umoja.

“They (Raila and Kalonzo) will find a way around the sticky issues. I want to believe that that has already been resolved. Kenyans should rest easy knowing that we will walk this journey together,” Maalim said as Kalonzo and Raila negotiated their reunion.
