President Uhuru Kenyatta on Wednesday, August 3, commissioned a one-of-a-kind National Defense University in Lanet Nakuru County. The college was awarded a charter on May 27 2021 giving it university status.

The institution will be the centre of military training in the area and the country at large. It is the only institution of its kind not only in East Africa but in Central Africa as well.

According to the management at the institution, cadets in the army, navy, and air will receive physical and intellectual training. In addition, civilians will also be trained due to the increasing international security threats.

Uhuru went on to praise the establishment as being a stronghold in maintaining national security and propelling towards prosperity. The university was stated to be in line with the national development agenda

"The National Defence University must, continuously, align its security programs to the national development agenda,'" stated Uhuru.

The Head of State also officially launched the institution's website alongside Vice Chancellor Lieutenant Jonah Mwangi and the Chief of Defence Forces.

Notably, Uhuru emphasized his commitment to empowering the defence security department through establishing channels and institutions that provide quality education and training.

“The establishment of the National Defence University of Kenya comes when conflict resolution requires modern measures. We will provide strategic defence and security education towards bringing up a well-grounded generation of officers with new ideas and technology,” the VC said.

The institution will also address matters relating to cybercrimes and terror attacks and other geopolitical security threats. Training will include advanced skills and technology in the security sector.

According to the VC, the institution already has 179 trainees pursuing a Bachelor of Science in Defence and Security Studies. He added the institution had blended its teaching and management staff between military officers and civilians.

He added that the institution would cater to specialized officers who have a well-known background.

The president, while appreciating the nation for the support during his tenure, noted that the university was the first public institution to be established under section 24 of the University Act 2012.
