The race attracted three top contenders among them an Orange Democratic Movement (ODM) candidate Alfred Khangati who got 12,970 votes.

Wamunyinyi won the seat in 2013 on a Ford Kenya ticket before joining DAP-Kenya in 2021 when he was elected party leader.

In Tongaren Constituency, John Chikati of Ford Kenya trounced the incumbent Eseli Simiyu, the DAP-K Secretary General after garnering 20,108 votes,

The DAP-K party official came second with 9,802 votes. Makali lost to Wamunyinyi in 2017 for the Kanduyi seat.

He abandoned Ford Kenya after he fell out with incumbent Bungoma Senator Moses Wetang'ula. The two were involved in a protracted battle for control of the party.

Bungoma County, one of the five counties in the Western region, saw Kenya Kwanza flagbearer William Ruto get a significant share of the presidential votes - based on provisional results from the IEBC portal.

Wetangula forms part of Kenya Kwanza principals from Western region who were tasked to deliver 70 per cent of total votes from the Mulembe nation.

According to the provisional results, the soft-spoken Senator was well-placed to retain the seat.

The former Senate Minority Leader is hoping to defend his seat on the Ford Kenya ticket. Other notable Kenya Kwanza candidates in Bungoma include Senate Speaker Kenneth Lusaka who is vying for the county’s gubernatorial seat.
